I've been seeing a lot of posts on Facebook lately, of families wondering if they've done everything they wanted to this summer (With Clara attending school away from us this fall for the very first time, I'm wondering if I've done everything I've wanted to with her in the last FIVE YEARS!).
Next weekend, A Sweet Event is excited to offer two family events in Duluth, back to back.
The first will be Saturday August 15th- the Lollipop Diaper Derby at Kid's Day the Miller Hill Mall. Our very own Logan attempted to hop to victory two years ago, and then was disqualified for hopping out of his lane.
Nevertheless, it was cute and a fun memory, so when the mall asked us to host the derby this year, we happily took advantage. Babies only have a very small "crawl window", and next year, you won't have it- so if you have a crawler, make sure you sign up here. There will be other great, family friendly things going on at the mall that day too- so make sure you check out Kid's Day!
The entrance fee for the derby is $2, or a package of diapers- all to be donated to the Vineyard Fruit of the Vine Food Shelf serving local families right here in Duluth. Clara and I volunteer there frequently, and the people and the mission are very dear to our hearts as a family. It's a great opportunity to have some fun with your sweet baby, and help another family, maybe your neighbor, while you do!
Then on Sunday, August 16th, is the first ever Bubble Bash down at Leif Erickson Park. It's from 4-6:00 PM. A $7 ticket gets you lunch, hang out time with some of the princesses and Spider Man from one of our favorite companies- Pretty Princess Parties. But wait! There's more! Duluth Kids Club (doing awesome work as well for families in our community) will be on hand doing face painting and crafts along with the Duluth Children's Museum. To top it all off- the namesake of the event- Diamond MC Entertainment will be providing tons of bubbles, music, and fun! I don't know about your kids, but ours LOVE bubbles. Bubble parties are taking off around the country, you won't want to miss all this fun for a very reasonable price thanks to some great sponsors like CVS, Dr. Pepper, and Arby's. Make sure you check out the Bubble Bash event page for more info.
I feel truly blessed to live in this community, surrounded by businesses and organizations that are for your family. Duluth is such a great place to raise your family, isn't it? So come get the best you can out of the rest of this summer with your family. We can't wait to see you!

1st Annual Daddy Daughter Princess Ball was a Success!
This past Saturday, A Sweet Event hosted the first annual Daddy Daughter Princess Ball in Duluth. It definitely surpassed our expectations, and we had a ton of fun putting it on.
Special thanks to Diamond MC Entertainment and Pretty Princess Parties for truly making it everything it was. Both of these companies, like us, are 100% LOCAL to Duluth.
As per usual, our whole family was involved in putting this event together.
So why a daddy daughter ball? Well, like all of you parents out there can relate, our little ones go from this:
To this:
Overnight. I plan on sitting with that picture on my lap one day comparing it to her prom picture, sobbing my eyes out and hitting a box of chocolates like it's my last meal, but I digress.
These moments are fleeting and valuable. As you know, we also love families. And we wanted to try something to focus on families in our community and give them an option that was fun, yet affordable.
We chose to try it out with a family dynamic that we love: daddies and daughters, and the Daddy Daughter Princess Ball was born.
Dads have tremendous value in the lives of their little girls. Did you know:
- Babies as young as six months whose fathers are present and active in the home score higher on mental development tests than babies whose fathers are not present and active (Source)
- Teenage girls who are close to their fathers are far less likely to become sexually active. (Source)
- Teenage girls are twice as likely to stay in school if their fathers are involved in their lives. (Source)
- Toddlers securely attached to fathers are better at solving problems. (Source)
- With dads present in the home, kids manage school stress better.(Source)
- Girls whose fathers provide warmth and control achieve higher academic success. (Source)
- Girls who are close to their fathers exhibit less anxiety and withdrawn behaviors. (Source)
That's pretty important stuff.
So to all the dads, stepdads, grandpas, uncles, and other guys we met on Saturday night, thank you for recognizing the importance you play in your little girl's life. We at A Sweet Event, Pretty Princess Parties, Diamond MC Entertainment, Meadowlark, Misty Pelican Photography, the Radisson, and Cake Occasions consider it a privilege to come together and put on a fun event for you amazing guys and your little princesses. We sincerely thank you for coming, and making it a success. Because of that, you can look forward to another ball next year!

So what's next? Thanks to the success of the ball, two things we have in the works are a family luau set for July 25th. We are also in the very early stages of planning a mother son ball. Not only do we have a little princess in our family, but we also have an incredibly handsome son.
We definitely hear you ladies, that you want a night out too! Look for that event, likely early fall.
We wanted to highlight some of the people in our community that came out to make this event a success.
To all you little ladies, we hope you never settle for anything less than the love, respect, and protection shown to you by these gentlemen in your lives. Thank you dads and daughters, we hope to see you next year!

Introducing Our New Wedding & Wedding Shower Candy Buffet!
Happy new year! It's officially January. Which means wind chill warnings abound in our neck of the woods and my pink Snuggie and I re-kindle our old friendship.
January is also sort of the unofficial kick off of wedding season, and right away in January we are exhibiting at two local wedding shows. One was today, and one is next weekend.
Today's show was hosted by Diamond MC Entertainment, which my brother-in-law and sister-in-law run. They hosted it at the Miller Hill Mall, and so naturally with so many friends involved, we exhibited there today. Next Saturday we will also be exhibiting at the Duluth Bridal Show at the DECC. Sadly, I wasn't able to exhibit at the expo today, I spent my afternoon coloring Frozen pictures and racing toy cars. However, I'll be joining Peter at next weekend's show.
With the start of wedding season, Peter and I decided it was time to finally execute a theme for a wedding candy buffet we had been talking about for a long time. We think it's perfect for the current trends of many of the weddings we have seen lately.
Behold, the vintage shabby chic candy buffet! Peter and I worked hours on this, long conversations about what it would look like notwithstanding.
Now, I super-love this theme because it is so my taste. The vintage, farmhouse chic, shabby chic, whatever-ya-call-it look is slowly taking over my home decor as well. It felt good to channel our love for this type of look into a candy buffet.
The great thing about this candy buffet is it translates well into bridal showers or baby showers as well.
If you missed the wedding show today, come out and see us at the one next week. We hope you like the new buffet as much as we do!
